JOIN FATOU TOURS GAMBIA FOR FASCINATING WEEK-LONG TOUR, DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE YOU TO THE COUNTRY’S SPECTACULAR BIRDLIFE. THE TOUR TAKE IN THE BEST OF THE GAMBIA’S COASTAL HABITATS AND BIRDING AREAS INCLUDING TANJI BIRD RESERVE, KARTONG WETLANDS, PIRANG SHRIMP FARM, VARIED WOODLANDS HABITATS AND THE LAST REMNANT OF GREEN GALLERY FORESTS.


DAY 1

TANJI BIRD RESERVE AND BRUFUT WOODLAND

 0n our first day, we’ll set out for day to Brufut woods and Tanji Bird Reserve, starting at Brufut where we’ll scroll the forest margins in search of Swallow Tailed Bee Eater, Klaa’s Cuckoo, Pearl Spotted Owlet, Red Necked Falcon, African Green Pigeon, Singing Cisticola, Western Grey Plantain Eater, White Faced Scops Owl, Black Shouldered Kite, Black Crowned Tcharga, Greater Blue Eared Starling and a whole host of others 

we’ll proceed to have a look inside  the forest and here we’ll have an incredible close  view of Long Tailed Nightjar  and finally  we’ll enjoy a nice  mix of species that  frequent the drink Bowls  at the Brufut  woods, species such as  Greater Honey guide,  Yellow Throated Leaf love , Green Turaco, Violet Turaco, Yellow White Eye, Lesser Honey guide, Blue Spotted Wood Dove, Grey Headed Bristle bill, Northern Red Bishop, African Pygmy Kingfisher and lots of others.   Later on we drive to Tanji Bird Reserve-the lagoons along the Tanji Beach are home to a wide variety of shorebirds and Seabirds including Kelp Gull, Caspian Tern, Lesser Crested Tern, Royal Tern alongside a good number of both migrant and resident waders. Next  we’ll  also search the woodland, scrubs and Marshes to look for Orange Breasted Bush Shrike, Vieilot’s Barbet, Blue Cheeked Bee Eater, Common Wattle Eye, Lizard Buzzard, Violet Turaco, African Pied Hornbill, Grey Kestrel, Yellow Fronted Tinker bird among host of others.

DAY 2

A DAY TRIP TO KARTONG WETLNAD AND BOAT RIDE ALONG THE ALLEHEIN RIVER


Today, we’ll make a day trip to Kartong, at the southern tip of the country. We’ll start to have a look at the freshwater pond and the sandy beach for sheer variety of waterfowls, waders, raptors and woodland birds, possible species include Purple Swamphen, Black Crake, Knob Billed Duck, Ruff, Malachite kingfisher, Greater Painted Snipe ,Grey Headed Kingfisher, White Fronted Plover, African Spoonbill, Mosque Swallow, Lanner Falcon, Senegal Batis, BruBru,  Rufous Crowned Roller Osprey, Palm nut Vulture,  Beaudouin Snake Eagle,  and occasionally Northern Carmine Bee Eater.

 In the afternoon, we’ll be drifting slowly along the Allenhein River by local pirogue and during this relaxing the boat trip we may have good views of a range of species including Giant Kingfisher, the impressive Goliath Heron, Yellow Billed Stork, African Fish Eagle, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Sandwich Tern, Kelp Gull, Gull Bill Tern, Broad Billed Roller, various Egret, herons and wading birds.

DAY 3

FULL DAY BIRDING, KOTU CREEK, CYCLE TRACK AND FAJARA GOLF COURSE


After Breakfast. We’ll head to Kotu Creek, where we’ll take in the wonderful kotu creek by canoe, this short canoe trip is usually the highlights of the day trip as we’ll be accorded a perfect opportunity for close up views of Prettiest west African endemic, Oriole Warbler, many species of Kingfishers, spoonbills, Sacred Ibis, Pelicans, several Egrets, Herons and plenty of other wading birds.

The afternoon will see us head to the famous Fajara Golf Course where we’ll checkout some woodland and scrub dwelling species  such as Black Crowned Tchagra, Northern Buff Back,  Double Spurred Francolin, Variable Sunbird. Senegal Parrot,  Green Wood Hoopoe, Fork Tailed Drongo, Blue Bellied Roller, Splendid Sunbird, African Silver bill, Long Tailed Starling, Fine Spotted Woodpecker, Shikra, African Harrier Hawk and many other interesting species.


DAY 4


PIRANG SHRIMP FARM AND PIRANG FOREST PARK


These 52 man-made ponds is truly haven for waders and water birds, an early  start will see us walking on the dykes to look for diverse species of aquatic birds including Eurasian migrant such as Crested Lark, Pied Avocet, Curlew Sandpiper, Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill,  along with African Spoonbill, Pink Backed Pelican, Great White Pelican, Little Tern, Caspian Tern,  and Slender Billed Gull,  Egrets and  numerous Herons other possible species include African Quail Finch, Namaqua Dove, Abyssinian Roller, Red Necked Falcon, African Harrier Hawk  plus host of other interesting species. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy some forest birding at  Pirang forest park, some of the exciting forest bird we’ll look for include, African Goshawk, Green Hylia, Green Crombec, Grey Headed Bristlebill, Little Greenbul, Yellowbill, Violet Turaco, Green Turaco, African Paradise Flycatcher, Common Wattle eye and the impressive Verreaux’s eagle Owl


DAY 5

CAMALOO CORNER AND BUND ROAD AREAS 


Today, we’ll explore birding habitats closer to the hotel areas, Camaloo Corner and Bund Road combine offers some of some best opportunity to see a lot birds especially waders, Seabirds, water birds as well as Passerines. Possibilities for this day tours include Wire Tailed Swallow, Black Shouldered Kite,  Blue Cheeked Bee Eater,   Hammerkop, Grey headed Gull, Lesser black Backed Gull, Royal tern,  Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu, Grey Backed Camaprotera, Lesser Blue Eared  Starling, both pelicans, Yellow billed Stork, Black Winged Stilt, Subalpine Warbler, and plenty of other exciting birds.

DAY 6

ABUKO NATURE RESERVE AND LAMIN LODGE\ RICE FIELDS


we’ll dedicate a full day to birding the country’s oldest nature reserve; we’ll start with adjacent rice fields, where we’ll be looking for various water birds and waders including African Jacana, Black Crake, Dwarf Bittern, Green Sandpiper, Black Egret and host of egrets herons and wading birds, other possible species in the area include African Green Pigeon, Northern Black Flycatcher, Pearl Spotted Owlet, Beautiful Sunbird, Brown Babbler, Village Indigo bird, Bronze Mannikin, Red Billed Firefinch,  White Crowned Robin Chat, Lavender waxbill and many  more.

From the rice field we’ll move to the forest, here we hope to  see a myriad of forest and woodland birds including Western Bluebill, African Pygmy Kingfisher, Black Necked Weaver,  Common Wattle Eye, Yellow Breasted Apalis, Green Turaco, Snowy Crowned Robin Chat, Buff Spotted Woodpecker, Palm nut Vulture, African Harrier Hawk, Swallow Tailed Bee-Eater etc.

DAY 7

MARAKISSA WOODLAND, RICE FIELDS AND CREEK

on the last day of this fabulous coastal birding tour we’ll visit the Marakissa birding area, some few kilometres south west of Brikama. We’ll have an excellent opportunity to add more species on our already long list. Species we may encounter here include White Breasted Cuckoo Shrike, Yellow Throated Leaf love, Greater Painted Snipe, Greater Honey Guide, Jack Snipe, Dwarf Bittern, Malachite Kingfisher, long Crested Eagle, Shrike, Blue Breasted Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Senegal Eremomela, Lizard Buzzard, Black Rumped Waxbill, and a flock of Splendid Glossy Starling, after lunch break we stay around the River camp and nearby habitats to look for various finches, waxbill and other species
